The course was flat and smooth with safe wide corners around the UNLV stadium. The top two guys (Akers, Githens) on GC stayed at the front of the pack all afternoon and controlled the pace. Chris Walker threatened the leisurely pace a few times by putting in some attacks but admittedly it was an easy race. My plan was to sit comfortably in the top 5 for the entire race so that I could attempt to counter any attacks from the top GC guys. The attacks didn't come. The pace picked up for the final laps and I worked to get to 3rd wheel at the beginning of the final lap. The guy sitting 2nd wheel jumped hard with 2 turns to go and I jumped hard onto his wheel and went around him in the final corner and sprinted the 75-100m to the finish. It was a drag race but I was able to hold on for first, Cookie came from behind for 2nd with two other guys right there at the line. Platinum takes 1-2!
Fellow Santa Barbarians Chicken, Corey and teammates Hammer and Prof finished in the pack in the 3's and are ready for big things in the hills tomorrow.
Thanks to Steve Weixel for the photos. Steve finished mid-pack in one of his first Cat 4 races and Chesta "I will attack" Gilmore got taken out in the final corner in his race but is OK.

Mucho congrats on your first P/1/2 win.
Absolutely awesome! That picture is classic. I can see it now Team Platinum's greatest competition will come from within!! (hmm, maybe that was a bad thing to say, if any competitors ever read it...)
Good luck in the RR.
Nice job Gary. Can another upgrade be too far away?
